Pro Peninsula works with a network of individuals, communities, organizations, and institutions from around the world dedicated to sea turtle conservation. Through this Sea Turtle Conservation Network, or Grupo Tortuguero, we empower individuals and communities to conserve sea turtles by building our conservation network, expanding knowledge and developing innovative solutions and sharing them widely. |
Five species of sea turtle inhabit the Pacific coast of North America, including the leatherback, olive ridley, black, loggerhead and hawskbill; all are considered endangered.
Sea turtles are threatened by poachers who sell turtle meat and eggs on the black market, incidental capture in fishing nets, trawls, and longlines, the loss of nesting beaches to development, and by rising pollution levels in our oceans.
Pro Peninsula’s community-based effort, the Grupo Tortuguero, strives to address these threats and recover populations of migratory sea turtles through three main objectives:
