Home to one of the busiest border crossings in the
world, San Diego serves as an international hub in an ever globalizing world.
The development of locally focused values together with a sense of global
awareness is crucial to creating a conservation ethic in today’s youth. Ocean
Connectors crosses borders and cultural boundaries to create links and a shared
sense of stewardship between students in San Diego and Mexico.

Ocean Connectors
focuses on predominately low-income and bilingual schools in San Diego and
Mexico, where many students lack the opportunity to visit the nearby coast, let
alone participate in field trips, dynamic presentations and classroom
activities. Ocean Connectors fills an important gap at a crucial point in
students’ lives, when they are developing core values and becoming more aware of
the world around them. This unique, interdisciplinary program incorporates
lessons in science, language studies, internet use, reading, writing, art and
culture in a practical, 'real life' conservation effort. Ocean Connectors uses
migratory marine species to teach students important lessons in coastal
conservation, global awareness and marine science, while also incoporating the
state content standards for learning.
