Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo Home to the northernmost coral reef in the Eastern Pacific, endangered sea turtles, and a wealth of marine biodiversity, Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of the region’s most threatened gems. Since 2002, Pro Peninsula has supported the efforts of Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo, A.C., to conserve the biodiversity and unique marine habitat within the park. |
Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP), situated on the east cape of Baja California Sur, was established in 1995. The marine park, a Natural Protected Area, measures 7,111 hectares, and includes the only hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez, and one of just three living reefs in North America.
Unfortunately, this coral reef system faces a number of threats: coral bleaching; unregulated fishing and scuba-diving; and worst of all, the increasing sediment discharges that would result from the changes in soil composition through high impact tourist developments. Unrestricted vehicular traffic along the beaches threatens the survival of the nests endangered Olive Ridley Leatherback sea turtles.
ACCP works with the local community to counter these threats, and create a culture of stewardship of natural resources through the following projects:
- Coral Reef Monitoring
- Environmental and Science Education Campaign
- Turtle Nest Protection Center
- Alternative economic activities – conservation tourism and projects with local women
