Vigilantes de Bahía Magdalena, A.C. Magdalena
Bay, the largest wetland ecosystem on the west coast of the Baja California
Peninsula, is considered one of the 10 most important wetland systems in North
America. Since the launch of Vigilante de Bahía Magdalena, the only
locally-based conservation organization in Magdalena Bay, Pro Peninsula has
played a vital role in advancing the group’s conservation efforts.

A vital calving
area for the Pacific Gray Whale, the Magdalena Bay also contains mangrove
forests, barrier beaches and sand dune islands, contributing to the breathtaking
scenery and diverse biological makeup of the Bay. The wetland harbors the
continent’s northernmost breeding colony of magnificent frigate, the
southernmost breeding site for threatened bald eagles, a large nesting colony of
the endangered California brown pelican and one of the largest California sea
lion colonies on the Pacific coast of the peninsula. The bay also provides
important feeding grounds to several species of sea turtle.
Vigilantes de Bahía Magdalena A.C., part of the International Waterkeeper
Network, defends the conservation interests of the community of Puerto San
Carlos, and the natural resources of Magdalena Bay.
Residential and industrial runoff, development of vital mangrove and dune
ecosystems, and the rampant overexploitation of natural resources, constantly
threaten the immense ecological value of the Bay’s natural resources.
Vigilantes de Bahia Magdalena is the only locally based civic group actively
addressing these issues, while fostering a culture of stewardship in the
community. Vigilantes’ projects include:
- Water quality monitoring
- Sea turtle monitoring
- Outreach and environmental education
- Defense of natural resources
