Guardianes de la Costa de La Paz, A.C. As the capital of Baja California Sur, La Paz relies upon the bountiful natural resources at its doorstep, which support fisheries and tourism, two industries vital to the city. Staggering growth in La Paz has stretched infrastructure, and threatened the viability of the very natural resources which provide income to La Paz. Pro Peninsula works directly with Guardianes de la Costa de la Paz, A.C., the community leader in defending the environment of this urban center. |
La Paz serves as the jumping off point to the Espiritu Santo group of islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Bio-Reserve, and a prime destination for world class diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. The beaches outside of La Paz, notably Balandra, are famous for crystal clear water and multiple hues of blue. Mogote, the sandspit protecting the bay, boasts red, black, and white mangroves that are home to numerous bird species.
Endangered whale sharks seasonally appear off Mogote where they feed in nutrient rich waters. Unfortunately, Mogote is already suffering from the destructive force of hotel development, which threaten many of La Paz’s pristine beaches. At the same time, pollution has become an issue in the bay, with water quality threatened by industrial and residential discharge.
While La Paz is home to a host of conservation NGO´s and research facilities, only Guardianes de la Costa de la Paz, AC, member of the International Waterkeeper Alliance focuses clearly on defending the Bay of La Paz from pollution and developmental threats through three areas of focus:
- Water quality monitoring
- Public education and outreach
- Promotion of regulation and application of environmental laws
