Embarking on some of the longest migrations in the natural world, sea turtles roam the oceans of our planet, following migration patterns and life cycles which carry them incredible distances. Efforts to learn about and protect sea turtles must follow suit, connecting local communities in a global network of conservation. Through in-class presentations and a binational pen pal program, Pro Peninsula’s Ocean Connectors teaches 5th and 6th graders in San Diego and Baja California the importance of thinking globally and acting locally to protect species like sea turtles from extinction. |
The Ocean Connectors program starts off in the classroom, teaching students in San Diego and Baja California about local ecology and sea turtle biology. Students then engage in a pen-pal exchange with their peers in communities along the migration path of the green sea turtle. Through their letters, students communicate their ideas on how to conserve this shared species. This program demonstrates how species such as sea turtles connect our vast oceans, as well as teaches the importance of communicating and working together to keep our oceans healthy and safe.
