Few San Diegans know of the hidden treasure swimming in the waters of south San Diego bay-the Eastern Pacific green sea turtle-and even fewer understand the impact that we have on these creatures on a daily basis. Through our Ocean Connectors education program, Pro Peninsula gives local students the opportunity to experience the marvels of nature firsthand and teaches them what they can do to protect them. |
Our exciting program starts in the classroom, where students receive a solid foundation of marine science concepts and local ecology in preparation for their field trips. Students learn about basic sea turtle characteristics, their life cycle and migration patterns, and what currently threatens their survival. We then bring the students on several amazing field trips in the South San Diego Bay. Students vist the Chula Vista Nature Center to learn about native wildlife and habitat ecology in the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Students also have the chance to interact with local researchers from the National Marine Fisheries Service as they perform exciting research on resident Eastern Pacific green sea turtles at the Marine Turtle Research Program study site. Students watch as the researchers capture, measure and tag the sea turtles, thereby witnessing the practical application of science firsthand. These field trips inspire our students to make sustainable environmental choices in their day to day lives.
