The Laguna San Ignacio Wetlands Complex
comprises 248 miles of wetlands coastline including intertidal mudflats, salt
flats, sandy beaches and red mangrove estuaries. As part of the Vizcaino
Biosphere reserve, the lagoon is best known for the gray whales that congregate
there each winter to breed and calve. It is also home to dolphin, sea lions,
endangered sea turtles, commercially important fish and shellfish, and
multitudes of migratory waterfowl, and shore birds. Protected species such as
Osprey, sea turtles, Peregrine falcons, and desert iguanas are included in its
fauna. |
It is the mission
and long-term goal of the Laguna San Ignacio ecosystem science program is to
develop and implement a multi-year, sustained program that provides land and
wildlife managers and developers with information on the status and trends of
the Laguna San Ignacio Wetlands Complex (LSIWC).
Pro Peninsula participates in the LSI Ecosystem project by providing
administrative support, and integrating our sea turtle research and conservation
efforts as part of the Grupo Tortuguero. Aspects of the project include:
- Gray whale census and photo-identification
- Acoustic research
- Benthic faunal and eel-grass communities
- Black sea turtle population surveys
- Local knowledge
