Fishers Exchange
Pro Peninsula brings together people from the whole world to protect sea turtles. In November of 2006 and August of 2007 we organized an exchange between fishermen, community leaders and researchers from the Japan, Mexico and the United States. Born on the beaches of Japan, and passing the Hawaiian islands on their way to their foraging grounds on the Baja California peninsula, these turtles are shared by all three countries; after reaching sexual maturity at about age 30, the turtles return to their place of birth to begin the cycle anew.
In order to rescue sea turtles from the brink of extinction, Pro peninsula recognizes we need to act decisively in each of the places where these turtles face habitat destruction, bycatch, and poaching.
